Mesene monostigma taxonomy is anything but clear (see new facts page).
these butterflies should be Mesene monostigma discolor, Pimpilala, 11 km South of Tena.
the two females are markedly different, but we assume they're both Mesene monostigma discolor.
males Mesene monostigma seem to have three forms, or ssp, with a clear geographic distribution :
1 - (orange) - flies roughly in the Eastern half of Brasil, but also in the Colombian and Ecuadorian Choco, and it would be the nominate ssp,
2 - (red) - the dominant form at Iguazú, but which also flies at the other end of the range, in the state of Pará and in French Guyana,
3 - (yellow) - the Andean foothills form, at least from the South of Colombia to Southern Peru, the females of which are a perfect match for the type of ssp discolor.
